Not all of these are kid-inspired, thank God.
Here are more of my forty-word something-somethings, written each day since my last e-mail.
“Freshman Year”
Dirty strangers packed into a bus heading downtown at 11:30 PM move as one with each bump in the road.
Later, they watch breath condense on windows shared by others hungry for the closet-free arrangement called home.
Our freshman year.
“Eyeballs”
Eyeballs stick to mirrors and cereal boxes. Little black pupils gaze toward the floor until she shakes breakfast into her bowl. A jump rope lying around from distance learning days hangs from a doorknob. “There! Looks like hair.”
Everyday surprises.
“Elevator”
“I wanted to hit the button!” she shrieks at her brother.
They spill into the elevator as one, but he slams his hand on the buttons first. All the floors light up. She answers with tears. The other passengers join.
What’s the best micro fiction you’ve read lately?
Thanks for reading.
