These past few days while I continue my Forty Until Forty self-challenge, I’ve been casting about for inspiration and prompts. One of these little forties comes from a prompt provided by a really good writer and friend Steve Fox whose debut story collection Sometimes Creek (Cornerstone Press) comes out in January, 2023. (Order his book and love that you did.)
Here are my 40-word something-somethings since the last time I wrote.
“Laundry”
No one else can touch the laundry.
I sense the baby’s drool on my lap, and I hear a click from the washing machine.
Now please put the baby back to sleep as I cannot permit anyone doing the laundry.
“Costume Selection”
The deadline for costume selection is Sunday.
You can change your mind until then.
You’re sure you want to dress as a box?
Now you’d rather be Elsa? Here’s one of our many wigs. It will fit on the box.
“Baby Biographer”
She asks her daughter to describe what mommy does for a living. (She cringes at the thought of writing her biography.)
Two sticky index fingers poke away at the open laptop.
“My mommy does laundry all day.”
She’s not wrong.
“Time to Practice”
Five minutes until we practice!
Okay. Wait, what?
How many minutes until we practice?
Did you know Harry Potter and Ginny like each other?
Let’s practice now.
One sec.
Time’s up.
You said five minutes!
What are we doing again?
Thank you for reading.
