I am still writing these 40-word something-somethings leading up to my 40th birthday, coming up in a couple of weeks.
I’d love to hear whether you participate in any writing or reading challenges.
Here are the pieces I wrote since my last e-mail installment.
“Changing”
Little hands shove the door. Like a cat yawning just wide enough to show what it’s eaten, the door opens. When it closes, the same little hands push again.
“Stop! Mommy’s changing!”
The little boy continues, and Mommy changes faster.
“Intact”
On one birthday, she accounted for her family members. Iowa, Utah, Minnesota, Colorado. Not here, but in those places, intact. She assumed this would remain the case.
The next birthday, they were fewer. She is older, and he won’t be.
“They Escaped”
Tension grips their shoulders as the family falls to all fours, eyes peeled.
“Listen to them scuttle around in the oatmeal,” he said, yesterday.
Who allows beetles as pets? Mom, unhappily.
Who didn’t shut the carrier correctly? That’s his responsibility.
Thanks for reading.
Have a great week.
